Otterford Church Jumble Sale PDF Print E-mail
Written by John Gale
Monday, 16 March 2009 09:45

The Parochial Church Council would like to thank the many willing helpers who came along on Saturday, March 14th to assist at our Jumble Sale.

We were fortunate that a whist drive the night before meant that the tables had been left out in the hall in readiness for the Sale. For the sorting of the goods in the morning, the manning of the stalls in the afternoon and the clearing away, we say a big thank you to all who came to help. Also thanks to those who provided refreshments and sold raffle tickets, and those who gave cakes and brought jumble.

Despite the competition of other events the sum of £317.67 was taken on the day.

Let the snow stop them from praising God? No way!

Last Sunday, the 8th February, 9 brave souls trekked through thick snow to reach the little church at Otterford. Whilst there was up to 12 inches of snow on the ground and the air outside was chilly, the welcome inside the church for the family service was very warm and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

The service was led by Rachel Ruthven and the sermon gave the children a helpful way to remember their prayers - the finger prayer. The children completed a handy card to take home to remind them of what they had learned.

There was a wonderful mix of traditional and modern hymns with the modern ones generating a bit of clapping and dancing - another way to beat the cold!

Finally, the congregation adjourned outside for a thoroughly enjoyable snowball fight. If only all Sundays could be like this!

Ottferford Church Family Walk PDF Print E-mail

After a very wet week with floods in the West Country and Northumberland the prospect for the walk seemed rather doubtful. However, on the day, the forecast was more hopeful and a small group assembled at the church for the start of the walk. The seven adults and six children who took part were all sensibly attired in wellington boots as we expected a rather muddy walk.

Ann Grabham had prepared the route and the children were given a map with questions to be answered and items to collect en route. This kept them all busy and, together with sloshing through muddy fields and streams, a very happy time was had by all.

The route took us on the footpath up behind the church, along the lane and across fields to School House at Brown Down, to Howstead, Owlhayes Farm and to Birchwood Chapel where we stopped for a picnic lunch, all food and drink having been taken by car to the site. The return journey then took us up the road to Waterhayes farm, across fields to Lower Fyfett, up to School Farm and over fields and back to the start.

Apart from being fun it was also quite an educational walk. We identified trees, learnt why dry cows were so called, were shown a spot where farmers used to wash their sheep. When we found a large metal disc at one farm David Ruthven explained how it was used long ago when metal rims were attached to wooden cart wheels.

Altogether a very enjoyable walk, and, above all, not a spot of rain!

Yearly membership costs £12, for which you will be allocated a number to be included in the draw each month. If you would like to join please contact John Gale.

Shoe Boxes for Christmas PDF Print E-mail
Written by Penny Gale

It has been the tradition in Otterford church for the children, and others, to leave a present under the Christmas tree at the Crib Service which would then be delivered to the Hollies children's nursery.

The Hollies was once a special place to support children and single parent families but has now developed into a recognised pre-school centre and, as such, does not need our support in the same way.

Therefore the decision has been made to try something different this year. I'm sure you have heard of Operation Christmas Child where shoe boxes are filled with gifts for children and are then sent to areas where children have very little. For hundreds of thousands of desperately needy children there will be no Christmas coming at all in 2008 unless we send it to them - in a shoe box. Last year 1.3 million needy children in Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and Africa received shoe boxes from children, families and individuals in the U.K. For many children who receive a shoe box it will be the first Christmas present they have ever received.

We are asking all who wish to help to fill a she box and bring it to a special Family Service in Otterford church on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9th, at 10.30 am, where we will explain about the scheme, which is run by a Christian charity called Samaritans Purse International.

The shoe boxes are given unconditionally, regardless of nationality, political background or religious beliefs.

Please help to make our effort count.

If you have any queries please ring Penny Gale.
