Clerical Kayakers triumph PDF Print E-mail

Sue & PaulPaul Reynolds and Sue Green successfully completed their journey from Totnes to Dittisham by kayak at half-past three on Monday 14 September.

The trip was organised to raise sponsorship money for the new youth worker who will be working in both parts of the local ministry group. Sue hopes that (if everyone pays up!)a total of around £600 will be raised.

The day started grey, but the first signs of sun were breaking through when the pair left Steamer Quay, Totnes, a little after noon on Monday. They made very good time, despite some persistent headwinds, and had a bite for lunch in Stoke Gabriel. Then it was off again to Dittisham to complete their journey.

Both vicars really enjoyed themselves and arrived in the sunshine having completed over seven miles of paddling. Paul didn't even get his feet wet - until he stepped ashore at the end!

Nearly a dozen members from the West Hatch benefice were on hand to observe the proceedings and give moral support.

Barry and JanHello Everyone,

Jan and I are glad to be here in the Blackdowns and I look forward to getting to know you and to working with you. I write just one week after a very stressful moving day, which including our removal lorry getting stuck in a ditch!

However, we are beginning to settle in now and are very grateful for the warm welcome we have received, so thank you very much.

On a more personal note, we have three children and three grandchildren who are the joy of our lives: we also have a dog and a cat. Our interests include walking (more Jan than me!), listening to music, wildlife watching, reading and knitting (Jan again!)

We look forward to the Licensing Service on 7th September at 7 pm and hope to meet some of you then!

Youth Worker PDF Print E-mail

Cheryl GovierHi!

I'm Cheryl Govier and I have recently been appointed as your youth worker!

I was brought up in mid Devon, in a little village called East Worlington about 20 minutes from Tiverton. My parents are farmers and I have a younger brother who is just about to graduate (we hope!!) from Harper Adams University as a Land Agent.

For the past 12 years I have attended Hele Lane Methodist church in Black Dog (mid Devon).

In 2001 I went to the University of Gloucestershire and graduated with a degree in Sport and Exercise Science, which will warn you that I am a bit of a sport fanatic! I am a keen hockey player, but enthusiastically participate in any sport I can! After graduating I had a gap year in which I travelled with a friend for 4 months in Australia and New Zealand, finishing the trip off with a visit to New York. I have since qualified as a PE Teacher, however have decided that it is not the career for me.

I became a Christian when I was about 7 or 8, and despite the many challenges and obstacles I have come up against in life I know it was the best decision I ever made. God never promised an easy ride, but I know he promises a safe arrival if I fulfil his will and make him the centre of my life. I am really excited about coming to work with you in the Blackdowns and pray I can have a positive impact. I look forward to meeting and working with you in the near future.

Peter’s Progress in the Blackdown Hills PDF Print E-mail

Bishop Peter Price, the Bishop of Bath and Wells, plans to walk part of the bounds of the Diocese in the Blackdown Hills on Thursday11th June 2009.

He sees this as a pilgrimage to the people and places in his care as Bishop, and as part of the celebration of the 1100th anniversary of the foundation of the Diocese. The Children's Society is the Anniversary Partner.

The plan for the day is to meet at 8.45 am at the Merry Harriers at Forches Corner, and to walk from there, via Burnworthy, to Churchstanton Church.

Bishop Peter will lead that part of the walk.

Then from Churchstanton Church to Bishopswood Village Hall, the walk will be led by Mrs Jane Tibbs, the Diocesan Children's Adviser.
It is hoped to leave Churchstanton Church at about 10.20am, passing by Otterford Church between 1.00pm and 1.20pm, and Birchwood Church between 1.45 and 2.05pm.

It is planned that refreshments will be available at the Merry Harriers between 8.45 and 9am, at Jacqui Rees's Deli, Higher Munty, between 10.50 and 11.20am, at the York Inn, Churchinford between 11.45am and 12.15 pm, and hopefully at Bishopswood on arrival there.
The idea is to "walk and talk" with as many local people , including children, as possible along the way, and to hear the church bells of Angersleigh, Churchstanton and Buckland St. Mary ringing to celebrate the occasion.

Would those wanting to join in please inform me so that approximate numbers may be known.
